I am a chef at a well known New York restaurant and while I love my work, it often drives me up the wall! There’s nothing better than creating the perfect dish and nothing worse than when things go wrong, often through no fault of your own. Or when an overly finicky customer who just wants to show off makes impossible demands that you have to try and meet. And a restaurant kitchen is noisy. And hot. Spending 8 plus hours a day is a sure way to a headache. I know how much I suffered until I found my not so secret weapon in the war against the noise and pressure. My wife gave me an iPod for my last birthday. At first I was reluctant to use it because I thought it would look silly in the kitchen, and interfere with my assistants trying to talk to me. But when she insisted I try it out, I did and found that having the kind of music I liked always available to me eased the pressures of the kitchen and reduced the effects of the noise. And if I kept the volume low, I would hear the music but at the same time, be able to hear when anyone called out to me for anything. Then, one day it fell into a bowl of gravy! Naturally it didn’t work after that. I was on the verge of throwing it away (and feeling lousy about it – it was a present from my wife after all) when a young trainee cook came to me and suggested I consider iPod repair.
