A Shorter, Sweeter, More Direct Phone Greeting

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

We are continuously looking for ways to improve things here at Milliamp, like our infamous laser pointers, and recently focused our attention to the telephone greeting that people first hear when they call in to us.

We get a lot of phone calls each day – a LOT (just ask Marian).

Therefore, we wanted to make our greeting simplier and to the point, and help people get to the correct department quickly and painlessly. We also added a quick shout-out in our greeting to the iPad repairs that we will be offering very soon to the masses.

Curious and don’t want to call in to hear it? Take a listen here:

New iPhone Repair Greeting

Speaking of iPad repair shout-outs, we also recently updated the signature line on our emails, to help spread the word that we have yet another Apple device to add to our list of devices that we can repair here at Milliamp.

iPad Parts Review – Internal Frame Photographs Analyzed

Friday, February 5th, 2010
First Looks: iPad's Internal Metal Frame

First Looks: iPad's Internal Metal Frame

www.ipad-repair.com

Photographs of the iPad’s Internal Frame have been widely circulated on the internet, but no one has really taken the time to closely examine these pictures…until now.

Follow the musings of our iPod and iPhone (and soon to be iPad) -fixing technicians as we pour over every photographic-inch of the internal frame that will allegedly be inside Apple’s iPad. We will give you our thoughts on iPad design and functionality at our new IPAD Repair website. This website will eventually contain everything related to this amazing new device, as well as photographs of the new iPad parts that surface between now and iPad Launch Day.

When you are done reading about our conclusions on the internal iPad frame, head back to this specific blog entry to post your comments.

Free Gold iPhone Back Cover and Bezel – Membership has Privileges

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

To show our appreciation for our hard-working iPod and iPhone and soon-to-be iPad Repair employees (and also to get them off my back), we are going to give away one of our shiny new gold iPhone backplates (and gold bezel) to one of our workers at our next weekly stand-up meeting on Monday!

Gold iPhone Back Cover Drawing

Gold iPhone Back Cover Drawing

The winning worker will be able to get a new gold backplate, new gold bezel, and new internal backplate parts (e.g. camera mount, headphone jack ring, etc.) and all the labor needed to swap out their boring black or white iPhone back cover with this stunning new mount.

They will, however, have to allow us to take a few professional, in-house pictures of their most-gloriously-bedazzled iPhone so that we can share our work with the world!

Until then, talk with you on Lunes.

iPhone Home Button Repair Surgery Helps Customer with Special Needs

Saturday, January 30th, 2010

When we were contacted by a customer that asked if we could make the Home Button on his iPhone 3GS easier to press, we asked him to send it on in and we’d see what we could do. It took several tries back and forth before we got it right, but the outcome was more than worth it – the customer can now use his iPhone 3GS again, thanks to our crack staff of iPhone repairmen.

We did a press release about this in case you want the details.

iPhone Home Button Pressure Mounts

This fellow has another iPhone that he is sending our way so we can repeat the procedure.

While this was one of the more challenging repairs we do, it was a refreshing break from the daily dose of iPod batteries, iPhone screens, and iPod nano glass that we repair. Being able to help customers when the have a problem is why we are in business, and success stories like being able to make the Home Button easier to press for this customer is very rewarding.

iPad Repair on Google – Visions of 2001 All Over Again

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

A co-worker pointed out to me yesterday, shortly after Apple’s big announcement that, when you do a Google search for ‘iPad Repair’, there are practically no search results, to the point that Google suggests “Did you mean ‘ipod repair’?”:

Search Results on Google for 'ipad repair' are Just Brewing

Search Results on Google for 'ipad repair' are Just Brewing

I found this quite funny, and it got me wondering at what point does Google feel that there are enough search results to justify NOT showing suggested alternatives. Then, I found myself thinking about the post I did a while back on Google’s search engine the way it was back in 2007- note the paltry search results for ‘ipod’ back then – incredible compared to today’s results!

Well, it will not be long before clever iPad repair sites start showing up in the search engines, and can offer super iPad repairs to those who need it most.

We Yong Yang, Do You?

Sunday, January 17th, 2010

Yong in the Milliamp House

We had the good fortune to have one of our iPod parts supplier Yong (but because it sounds so similar, we call him Mike) visit milliamp-Central last week. He spent three days in the Alamo City, and it was complete with tours, late-night brainstorming sessions, and the requisite dinner at Pappadeaux’s for a delicious Swamp Thing.

Heck, we even managed to work in a Spurs game, and got to watch Kobe Bryant head back West in shame.

Getting good, quality iPod parts and iPhone parts is an art, and it’s important to have your suppliers lined up. It is also important to be able to communicate with them and explain that we only want the best iPhone and iPod parts available. It is not every day that a supplier comes to visit us here in the United States – usually, we have to go there in order to get that point across.

It is nice to see suppliers coming here to meet with us so we can finally put a face with an email address. This openess can only bring good things: better parts, better prices, and even new supply chains that will dazzle the competition.

Lady Liberty Seeks iPod Repair

Monday, January 11th, 2010

Well just when we thought we’ve seen everything, lady liberty aka The Statue of Liberty walked through our doors today:

Usually, we see people dressed like this on the street hawking Tax Preparation Services (btw, is that just a San Antonio thing, or does this happen elsewhere?!), but to have Lady Torch come into our iPhone repair offices, well, that’s just dang odd!

Have a great week.

milliamp Challenge: The Techs Go Hard Core

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

We have an insanely-dedicated group of workers, and our iPod and iPhone Repair Technicians really stepped it up this weekend. They spent a great part of the past couple of days to help us get caught up on the onslaught of devices that we have received during this holiday season.

Here is a shot of some of them working tonight (Sunday) around 8pm:

DeLorean Lands at IPOD Repair Site

Thursday, December 10th, 2009

We had a customer arrive today in a real silver DeLorean – and it caused quite a stir amongst our IPOD repair staff, including myself.

I chided the customer about disrupting my office, and he kidded that everytime he parks his ride, “it’s an auto-show”. The man was gracious enough to let us snap a few photographs of his car, and we even took a short video of the disturbance:

YouTube Preview Image

In the end, the man bailed on getting his IPHONE repaired – I personally think he was just going to hit 88 MPH on I-10 and go back to the point in time right before he broke his IPHONE screen, but it’s hard to say for sure.

P.S. What do the DeLorean and the orginal 1st Generation IPOD have in common? You can’t get parts for either of them!!

IPOD Problems Fixed on Cyber Monday

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009
The milliamp.com Staff Hard at Work on Cyber Monday

The milliamp.com Staff Hard at Work on Cyber Monday

It was a busy day here at milliamp.com – Cyber Monday Busy.

We configured our phones today so that any warm body in the office had a chance to speak directly with one of the hundreds of people that visited our website and had a question about getting their IPOD or IPHONE repaired at an affordable price. This put our technicians, usually neck-deep in repairs, on the front lines and speaking directly with our customers.

On top of all the emails and phone calls, the chime on our shop door sounded off so frequently from all the walk-in traffic, I was half-surprised it still worked by days’ end.

For those not aware, the Monday after Thanksgiving is typically a big day for online repair companies, and IPOD repair stores like us see a big spike in sales on this day, and pretty much all the other days leading up to Christmas. The day is usually also accompanied with a host of one-day coupon codes and discounts, and our site was no exception:

We Got in the Discount Spirit Today

We Got in the Discount Spirit Today

Despite all the craziness, we were all able to remain professional with our customers and with each other. I even had a bit of time to jet downtown to register an exciting new DBA in the morning, and give a quick tour later in the day to a gentleman from an IPHONE Review website that has showered us with kudos for our great repairs and friendly customer service.

Phwew, What a Day.

iPhone Repair Live! ‘Da Owner Gets Interviewed

Saturday, November 21st, 2009

I just finished being interviewed by the three amigos over at buymeaniphone.com – and it was LIVE, no less! The interview was conducted on Saturday at 10pm CST, which is a bit late for me, but more conducive to the primarily West-Coast-based viewers. No matter – the interview was really fun to do and hopefully informative for their listeners.

I was actually sitting in our iPod/iPhone repair waiting room when the interview was conducted, the same place where customers can sit while we knock out their repairs, or where they can place an order with one of our friendly staff members.

Both the interviewers (Tom, Omar, and Ryan) asked great questions about milliamp.com’s iPod touch and iPhone repair business, and there was even a live chat with questions from their audience slipped in questions as well.

The guys were even generous enough to allow me to work in a great big announcement about a recent milestone of ours. It is based on the total number of customers we have had so far, and whoever participates in the offer will get a cool gift for their iPhone 3G or 3GS – it is a $70 value – for free!

If you want to know what that offer is, you will just have to pull up the video: http://www.milliamp.com/contact-the-owner.html

After they were done interviewing me, they guys discussed a wide variety of other topics, occasionally interrupted by asking their audience questions that were related to my interview. It was cool seeing how many people actually watched the interview and how many people remembered what they just watched. The winners of the interview trivia questions were then given special coupon codes that only could be used by the winner.

P.S. Ever heard of stickam.com? Stickam rocks!

The technician life

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

It has been forever since I’ve posted a blog. I hope you can forgive me for my absence. So much has changed the past couple of months. I made my way from customer service/sales to technician! Being a tech is awesome! I love taking things apart and putting them back together. It’s also interesting to learn how all the iPods and iPhones are put together. Plus there is always something to do. There is never a dull moment. There is also never a dull conversation with my fellow techs. :-) Since my new position in the company I haven’t had a chance to go to new resturants, so my food blogs are on hold. Hopefully, Ill have a new food blog in a week or two.
I’m actually writing this blog on my iPhone! I was trying to think how I could find time to write more blogs, and what do you know? Wordpress has an app! Amazing. I love my iPhone.
Well friends that’s it for me. Stay classy!

Wait!!!!!
My favorite band in the whole world, SWITCHFOOT, released a new cd. Hello Hurricane!! Go check it out, it’s making it’s way to my favorite record of all time.

Forget Flowcharts: Now You Can WATCH the iPod/iPhone Repair Process

Video Shows Repair Process for Apple's IPHONE

New Video to Show Repair Process for Apple's IPHONE Hits Site

This is has been on my to-do list for months, and we finally took the time to knock it out:

Showing (in this case, an iPhone) being delivered, the package being opened by our Receiving Department, the device moving into our Repair Department, getting evaluated, a Customer Service representative speaking with the customer about the evaluation findings and getting the approval to complete the repairs, parts getting pulled, a technician repairing the device, the iPhone being tested out in Quality Control, and then finally the device being packaged up and shipped out.

The only thing missing is the event that caused the damage in the first place and the happy look on our customers face when the get their newly-repaired iPod or iPhone back from us.

While this process normally takes several days, we were able to boil it down into a two minute video, and it’s a really effective way to show how the iPod repair process works:

YouTube Preview Image

Hey, and it also gave us a chance to showcase some of the hard-working people that we have over here working for us!

We still have the video in an editable mode – anything else that we should include that will be helpful for our great customers? And no bashing the background music, alright?!!

From iPod Repair to Toad Overload

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

It’s great to take a break from managing one of the best iPod repair companies on the web and do exciting things with the family.

My kids and i were out walking around on Sunday in our neighborhood after a few rainy days here in San Antonio and we were amazed to find all these tiny little toads (not frogs, I am told) hopping around on the pavement. Well our little 20 minute walk turned into a 2 hour adventure – the kiddos managed to scoop up approximately 200 toads!

Toad Overload on the Road

Toad Overload on the Road

The timing of this find was spot on – next week it seems we are going to be the proud recipients of two (omnivorous) baby Bearded Dragons (another blog post on that will be sure to follow!), and these little guys might just make the perfect snack.

“How Does the iPod/iPhone Repair Process Work??” Explained Graphically

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

One of the most common questions we receive from our customers each day is “How does this all work?!”. The whole process of sending your iPod or iPhone in to us to have repaired is somewhat of a mystery to most folks, so we thought it would be helpful to boil it all down to a simple graphic on our website:

The iPhone Repair Process Explained

Unlike the graphic that you see here, the one on our site will have each section be “clickable” so that you can read even more detail about the various stages of the iPod repair process, and what each entails.

So Cool!!

Farewell Cat

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

waveThis blog is dedicated to Cat.  She is one of our finest customer service representatives.  She’s always willing to tackle the toughest phone call or email.  She’ll even go out of her way to track down a customer’s device just to get the most up to date status on it.  Not only does she have excellent customer service skills, she has been a great help in shipping, which is the department I oversee.  On her first day, she had pretty much accomplished all the shipping tasks and offered great ideas for improvement.  I’m sure with a little training, she could become a technician, if she hasn’t already!  So long, farewell, good luck with your move and come back to see us and/or work for us again!

milliamp.com Love the Labor Day Slam

We have been incredibly fortunate over these past few days after the holiday Labor Day weekend – it is as if everyone was discussing how the get the iPod problems fixed, and then headed right over to milliamp.com to get their ipod or iphone evaluated so they could see what might be causing their beloved device from working properly.

It’s been a mad rush of people coming and going, too. Lots of new hires, and a few others moving on to bigger and better things.

What a dynamic, exciting, challenging, business this iPod repair business is!

Let Me Count the Ways…to Contact Us for iPhone Repair

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

Contact Us for iPhone ProblemsWhat a cool thing the internet is. It has enabled us to increase the number of ways customers can contact us when they have a question about their iPhone problems or an iPod they have sent in to us to be fixed.

Well, let’s start with ways you CAN’T contact us anymore – we killed our fax line. Yep, it was hardly ever used for inbound faxing, and largely used by me only for faxing out. But not worth the expense, so it’s gone.

    Ways you CAN contact us:

Telephone: 210-568-7473 (local and international) or 800-809-8133 for those worried about having to pay for a call (hmmm…are toll-free numbers going to be obsolete…hey that’s another topic for a future blog post perhaps…)

Email: service@milliamp.com to reach one of our responsive and knowledgeable customer service agents. Email us at any time and we immediately bounce-back a message to let you know that we have received your email, along with a list of answer to our commonly-asked questions.

Chat via AOL IM: MilliampService for those that prefer to chat with us. This is a great way to reach out to us during your workday and get the answers you need.

Tweet MilliampLor head to http://twitter.com/milliamp if you like this medium.

Walk in the Door and ask us something. We are open during normal business hours and love to help our fellow San Antonians, as well as our other fans that stop in and say hello when the are visiting from out of town.

This blog is another great way to reach us.

Our new Repair Forum is yet another resource that is still getting off the ground, but is a powerful way to reach us with your specific question(s), and at the same time help others that might search for the same question: http://www.milliamp.com/forum/

So, what are you waiting for? Contact us!!

Bullet Proof iPods

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

I recently watched an episode of Mythbusters about the typical items people carry on themselves that are bullet proof.  Some of the items were a belt buckle, an officer’s badge, and pizza.  Unfortunately, an iPod is not bullet proof, but we can probably fix it if it ever gets shot!

This week’s App Pik by Jared is: Mission Control Lite by the game creators

MC

It’s free of course and it’s only a sample version, but even this sample is tons of fun.  You have to land these space ships in a space pod before they run out of fuel or get shot down by an alien space craft.  Be careful not to crash into others or on the ground.  You can attack the alien space craft too.  It’s similar to another app of a traffic controller for an airport, but Mission Control is better!  I give this app 5 out of 5.

Walk-Ins Welcome at this Broken iPhone Screen Repair Shop

Monday, August 31st, 2009

New iPhone Parts Installed While You Rest

New iPhone Parts Installed While You Rest

We have serviced walk-in customers for many many months (years, in fact) but not until recently have we begun to experiment with offering same-day and even a while-you-wait iPod repair or iPhone repair to our local customers.

This includes iPhone screen repairs, iPhone 3GS screens, iPhone 3G screens, and of course all the other typical iPod repairs like batteries, LCD’s, hard drives, and even some logic board replacements.

Since we need a bit of time to complete same-day service, we ask that customers arrive before 2pm weekdays to have this kind of work done, so that we have time to not only complete the repairs, but to also test out the device and give a nice cleaning before you arrive to pickup after 4pm.

For those in a huge hurry, we offer a while you wait service, where you get to jump ahead of the hundred or so devices that arrived before yours, and we work with your device immediately (although we gently urge customers to go grab a bit to each, get their car washed, etc. so they don’t have to hang out in our lobby for that brief period of time!).

Customers that are not in a huge rush can always leave their broken iPod with us for a few days so we can complete the repair and either ship it back to them, or keep it here in our shop, ready for the next time they are in the area and ready to pickup their repaired iPhone.

Can This Cart Help Reduce Lines for Walk-In Customers at milliamp.com?

Can This Cart Help Reduce Lines for Walk-In Customers at milliamp.com?

The walk-in area of milliamp.com is getting a bit crowded these days, thanks to the constant referrals from the local Apple and AT&T Stores, plus the kind folks that just happen to be driving by and see our signs. We have a window for meeting and greeting customers, but i hate to see folks wait, probably even more than they hate waiting. So since the window is being blocked by order taking, i thought it might be cool to have a little portable cart – called a spider cart in the industry vernacular apparently – with a wireless laptop on it so that we can take orders from people that are standing in line. It’s just in the idea phase right now – but might just become a fixture of our walk-in area in the near future to better serve our iPod and iPhone breaking customers.
