A Great Product Deserves a Batter Package

Bisquick's Shake 'n Pour

Bisquick's Shake 'n Pour

I am a fan of great products and product design.

We spend a fair amount of time to make sure that the iPod battery replacement kits we sell are accurate, clear, complete, and contain eveything you need to replace the battery in your Apple iPod. But there is one product that I started using (completely unrelated to iPod battery kits!) about a year ago and, to this day, still reflect on how useful and convenient it is (although one could argue about the price and the environmental implications).

I am talking about Shake ‘n Pour pancake mix from Bisquick in it’s new shakeable container. It comes in two sizes that I know of: small size for making 6 – 8 pancakes and a larger size when you need to make a bit more. Like any Bisquick, you can also make waffles with it, as evidenced here in another post of mine.

Anyways, the container is slick: bright yellow plastic bottle with bright white lettering on a blue background. Imprinted within the plastic bottle is a line to which you fill up with water. The water sits above the Bisquick flour, so it’s pretty easy to get just the right amount of water inside.

Afterwards, you put the blue cap back on, and shake it up. The only downside is the mixing – you have to really shake up the solution in order to get the water and Bisquick to mix and work out all the lumps. I think a simple design change to the bottom inside of the yellow bottle OR perhaps the underside of the blue cap would improve the agitation procees. An elongated baffle to stick out and into the container would create more disturbance during the shaking process and in turn result in easier mixing.

I am not an engineer, but it just might be possible to create the additional baffle on the bottom inside of the plastic yellow container with the existing material used to make the bottle. Even if a tad more material was needed, the result would be a better product and, in turn, a happier consumer.
